Alfons Maria de Liguori (1696–1787) was an Italian Catholic bishop, The theologian and author of spiritual literature. He was known for his emphasis on mercy and practicality in moral theology, which was contrary to the then rigorous teachings known as Jansenism. In 1732 founded the Congregation of the Sacred Redeemer, known as Redemptorists, whose aim was to bring the gospel to poor and abandoned people in Italy.
