Description

This rare specimen ("Sculpture Cabinet") comes from the period around the year 1640 and represents the peak. The cabinet is composed as a monumental architectural unit - divided into the bottom and upper part, which ends with a distinctive ledge and wide fries. Characteristic columns or karyatides promote the façade and create a plastic impression of structural wealth.

The decoration is iconographically rich - reliefs depict allegories of theological and cardinal virtues (e.g. Hope with a book, Mercy with children, Beetle; and wisdom, Justice, Force). This decoration transforms a cabinet from a mere piece of furniture to visual and symbolic representation of virtues and values. Type is one of the most expensive and most representative pieces of equipment in 17. century in Flanders and the Netherlands.
