Description

Hans Memling was among the most important painters of the early Dutch school, known as Flemish primitives, and his work fundamentally influenced artistic development in 15. century. During his long career, he established himself not only as an exceptional painter, but also as an innovator, who introduced new techniques and procedures to his works, thus gaining popularity with clients not only at home, but also abroad. Although we don't have much information about his life, many of his works have survived, which allow us to reconstruct his artistic career. Memling was born around 1440 v Selingstadtu, today's Germany, and he probably gained his first experience with painting from an unknown master in Cologne. Rogier van der Weyden had a significant influence on him, with whom he probably collaborated. This is confirmed by both historical records, as well as the stylistic similarities between the works of both artists. Memling settled in Bruges in 1465, shortly after Van der Weyden's death, and soon became one of the most respected painters in the city. Although Memling drew inspiration from Van der Weyden's work, he was able to create his own distinctive style, which was visible in his early works, such as Crabbe's triptych. This and other paintings reflect his ability to subtly model figures and create complex compositions, which have been enriched with innovative elements, such as vivid grisaille – a technique, which gave his figures the impression of plastic depth. Memling's career in Bruges quickly took off, when he won big orders, for example, for the Florentine Angelo Tani, for whom he created the large-scale altarpiece "The Last Judgment." This success ensured him a wide clientele, which included not only religious institutions and the wealthy middle class, but also the aristocracy. V 70. years 14. century he reached the peak of his career and became one of the richest residents of Bruges, which testifies to his exceptional success and influence on contemporary painting.
